Greet the New Year of the Tiger with Courage and Strength
Continue Promoting the Development of Die & Mould Industry
        -- 2022 New Year's Address

We are in the era of challenges and opportunities, confidence and perseverance. Complex international situation and domestic challenges are intertwined, volatility and complexity have become the norm. In 2021, COVID-19 pandemic raged through the world, the global environment remained extremely complex and unpredictable. Market disruptions and demand shifts resulted in uncertainties such as R&D budget crunch in both traditional and emerging industries and shrinking purchase orders from downstream sectors. With disrupted material and energy supply, the downward pressure of manufacturing industry became prominent. For Chinese entrepreneurs, this year was a year of adjustment accompanied by challenges. Demand fluctuation, production discontinuity and uncertainty in die and mould industry led to great pressure on die and mould makers, which exacerbated their decision-making risk. In the past year, China's economic development faced challenges. Leveraging resources of domestic market demand and policy stimulus, China’s die and mould industry kept developing smoothly. China’s die and mould enterprises responded to both domestic and international demand, made technological progress, demonstrated resilience. In particular, the CPC and the government’s tax policy support accelerated technological development and structural adjustment of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, die and mould enterprises, SMEs in particular, worked together with upstream and downstream sectors, helped keep domestic and global industrial and supply chains stable and smooth. China’s die and mould industry has met the new demand made by forming processes and has demonstrated the industry’s support to industrial and supply chains. China’s die and mould industry serves as an important pillar for people’s livelihood and China’s economy.

2021 is a year for a review of achievements and making historic strides. On the Centenary of the Communist Party of China, we reviewed the glorious journey and great contributions, cultivated a strong sense of cohesiveness throughout China’s die and mould industry. DMC2021 exhibition hosted by China Die & Mould Industry Association (CDMIA) coincided with the Ceremony Marking the Centenary of the Communist Party of China on July 1st. CDMIA held on-site event to champion the great founding spirit of the Party throughout die and mould industry. DMC2021 was successfully held with unity and progress, covering an exhibition area of 60,000 square meters, with active exchanges between exhibitors and buyers. It not only laid a solid foundation for the holding of DMC2022 in June 2022, but also provided a platform of publicity for the 16th ISTMA World Conference.

In 2021 China has gone through an extraordinary journey. The report to the 19th CPC National Congress stated that China's economy is in a pivotal stage for transforming the growth model, improving economic structure, and fostering new growth drivers. We keenly aware the necessity for pursuing the new development philosophy, and the trend of transition from relying heavily on increased consumption of material resources to relying mainly on advances in science and technology, improvement in the quality of the workforce and innovation in management. Die and mould industry serves as the pillar that supports the development of manufacturing, consumption and hi-tech industries. The “14th Five-Year” Development Program of Die & Mould Industry has been issued since Jun 2021, marking a new chapter featuring development, a new journey with both opportunities and challenges, and the new era of China’s die & mould industry. The publication of the Development Program has been supported by top-down strategic plan, by leveraging the merit of the entire industry with innovative perspectives. With the active participation in the Core Basic Parts and Basic Manufacturing Process Enhancement Action Plan (2021-2023) by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China (MIIT), CDMIA serves the industry and the government, submits industry research and analysis reports, puts forward policy recommendations, and forwards enterprises’ requests to government authorities at all levels regarding urgent issues such as lack of shipping space for die and mould export, surge in shipping fee, power rationing. The First Department of Equipment Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT) and the Department of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China have issued letters of appreciation to CDMIA in acknowledgement of its contribution.

Against the backdrop of disruptive market and advances in science and technology along with efforts to build China into a manufacturer of quality, China's die and mould industry faces challenges such as disappearing of demographic dividend, demand of cost reduction between upstream and downstream industry, lack of capital liquidity, product differentiation and industrial cluster. In addition, breakthroughs need to be achieved in product upgrade and structural adjustment to meet market demand, and in capacity enhancement of standardization, equipment upgrade, software application and process optimization. How to cultivate a new array of “little giants”, or leading small and medium enterprises that specialize in niche sectors, has become more urgent. In 2021, with the advocacy of cultivating leading SMEs, Six die & mould enterprises went public, 3 member enterprises of CDMIA were listed in the Sixth Batch of Individual Champions of Manufacturing Industry by MIIT. 23 member companies of CDMIA were selected as the third batch of “little giants” enterprises of China.

In 2021, China’s die & mould industry followed the "14th Five-Year Plan". Through the integration of technological advantages, production factors, product structure and information technology, China’s die and mould industry enhanced its competitiveness and gathered innovative resources and factors. The industry has been exploring an innovative development model, cultivating growth drivers promoting high-quality development of die and mould enterprises. Die and mould enterprises created innovative models such as digital management, platform design, smart manufacturing, connected coordination, customization, service extension.
Through design, manufacturing, feedback under the framework of quality control, die and mould enterprises enhanced equipment capacity and improved efficiency through software application. Through integrating the flow of information, manufacturing, capital, logistics and people, leveraging digitization technology, die and mould enterprises stepped up efforts to optimize operation model for reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. Sharing of manufacturing data and customer data improved efficiency in terms of operation and efficiency. An array of leading die and mould enterprises demonstrated such capabilities. At the same time, technological innovation has played a more important role in driving the growth of die and mould industry. In 2021, the total number of die and mould patents granted reached 80,836, including 7,758 for invention, 71,110 for utility model and 1,968 for design, up from the year of 2020 with over 60,000 granted patent in total. Compared with the total number of 105,789 die & mould patents granted during the 12th Five-Years Plan period, the pace of technological innovation has been greatly accelerated. Driven by innovative technologies, materials and forming processes, new structures and new products of die and mould have emerged. In terms of innovation, China’s die & mould industry has entered a new stage from following suit to taking the lead. CDMIA continues to recommend the China Patent Award to promote scientific and technological innovation and quality enhancement, and its 7 member enterprises have won the "The 22nd China Patent Award", demonstrating accelerated innovation and quality enhancement of China’s die and mould industry.

In the era featuring dual circulation and against the backdrop of complicated international environment with trade frictions, China remains opening-up and further integrates into the world economy. China’s die and mould products are irreplaceable in the global supply chain and complementary to that of major die and mould manufacturing countries in the world, demonstrating the competitiveness in technology and equipment, talents, dedication and flexibility, swift response brought by digitization, and the stable domestic supply chain and favorable market environment. And the trend of mutual benefit from import and export of die and mould products continues. At the same time, China’s die and mould enterprises are insightful to the international market. With strategic and effective market development approach, the export of China’s die and mould products to emerging manufacturing countries has gained prominent market share, demonstrating vitality and momentum in the international die and mould supply. China’s die and mould industry continues to play a crucial role in the global die and mould market. The total volume of China's die and mould imports and exports reached 8.94 billion US dollars in 2021, an increase of more than 13 percent over the previous year. Imports totaled 1.46 billion US dollars, down 8 percent and lower than the 1.5 billion US dollars of the previous year. The total export volume of die and mould reached 7.48 billion US dollars, an increase of more than 19 percent from the previous year, to a new level above 7 billion US dollars. Die and mould trade surplus reached 6 billion US dollars. China’s die and mould products have further integrate into the world market. CDMIA strives to strengthen cooperation with international die and mould associations regarding technology, standards and markets, and communicate with government to ensure unimpeded international logistics, and work together with die and mould enterprises to contribute to the prosperity of the international die and mould market.

2021 is also a year of establishing high-quality standard system in China’s die and mould industry. CDMIA has issued three evaluation standards, i.e. T/CDMIA A003-2021 Capability Evaluation Methods for the Digitization Capability of Die & Mould Steel Suppliers, T/CDMIA A004-2021 Assessment Methods for the Digitization Capability of Die & Mould Enterprises, T/CDMIA A005-2021 Assessment Methods for the Automation Capability of Die & Mould Enterprises, which has great significance for integrating steel suppliers and die and mould industry, for promoting digitization and automation, and for enhancing governance of standardization. These two T/CDMIA standards have been recommended to the International Special Tooling and Machining Association (ISTMA), promoting the high-level opening up.

Since the beginning of 2022, a large number of die and mould enterprises have reached their bottleneck by facing fierce competition in the market. In essence, die and mould products serve as the pillar of supply chain in terms of cost reduction, quality control and stabilizing production. Die and mould enterprises should adapt to the changing environment and make breakthroughs accordingly. In addition to providing customers with quality products and services, die and mould enterprises should develop efficient management models and improve business operation. Entering the new era featuring readjustment of supply chain and value chain, die and mould enterprises should take initiative and prioritize stability while pursuing progress, promote high-quality development and innovation. With tremendous efforts China’s die and mould enterprises have made significant progress.

In 2021, CDMIA signed the “Strategic Cooperation Agreement” with Ningbo Municipal Economic and Information Technology Bureau, a cooperation agreement with Kunshan National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, and the “Strategic Cooperation Agreement” with Shanghai Jiaotong University Press.
